🥧🍺 Steak and Ale Pie – Rich, Hearty & Comforting Classic! 🥩🔥
Tender beef slow-simmered in a deep ale gravy, wrapped in golden flaky pastry — British pub food doesn’t get better than this!
🛒 Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp olive oil 🫒
- 1.5 lbs beef chuck or stewing steak, cut into bite-sized pieces 🥩
- 1 onion, chopped 🧅
- 2 cloves garlic, minced 🧄
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup dark ale or stout (like Guinness) 🍺
- 1 cup beef broth 🥣
- 1 tbsp tomato paste 🍅
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried) 🌿
- Salt & pepper to taste 🧂
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed 🥐
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash) 🥚
👨🍳 Instructions:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
2️⃣ Brown the Beef:
In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown the beef in batches, 2–3 minutes per batch. Remove and set aside.
3️⃣ Build the Base:
In the same pot, sauté chopped onion and garlic for 3–4 minutes until soft. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
4️⃣ Make the Gravy:
Pour in ale and beef broth. Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
5️⃣ Simmer:
Return beef to the pot. Cover and simmer on low heat for 1.5 to 2 hours, until beef is tender and sauce is rich and thickened.
6️⃣ Assemble the Pie:
Spoon the beef mixture into a baking dish. Roll out puff pastry and lay over the top. Seal the edges and trim excess pastry if needed.
7️⃣ Top & Bake:
Brush with egg wash and cut 2–3 small slits in the top for steam to escape.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
🍽️ Serving Tip:
Serve with creamy mashed potatoes and buttered peas for the ultimate comfort meal — or go lighter with a crisp green salad. 🥔🥬
